Information about Kluge.Net

Kluge.Net is a small localized network that was created as an educational site to learn more about networking and such on the Internet. The definition of kluge is (from the jargon/hacker dictionary):

kluge: /klooj/ [from the German `klug', clever]
  1. n. A Rube Goldberg (or Heath Robinson) device, whether in hardware or software.
  2. n. A clever programming trick intended to solve a particular nasty case in an expedient, if not clear, manner. Often used to repair bugs. Often involves ad-hockery and verges on being a crock.
  3. n. Something that works for the wrong reason.
  4. vt. To insert a kluge into a program. "I've kluged this routine to get around that weird bug, but there's probably a better way."
  5. [WPI] n. A feature that is implemented in a rude manner.

Notice by the way that it's spelled kluge, not kludge... If you use the 'd', you're spelling it incorrectly.

My favorite description of kluge is as follows:

[Demonstration of kluging] "You know that toy when you were a kid with the spheres and cubes, and you had to get the spheres through the round holes, etc... ? Well, kluging is the fine art of taking the spherical piece, putting it into the square hole, and beating it with a hammer until it goes through."

{WPI Graphic} Between Fall 1994 and Spring 1998, the main kluge.net systems had been located at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The Systems Administrator (felicity) was a Computer Science major at WPI until March 1998 when he completed all of the requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.

The main kluge.net system is now located elsewhere on a dedicated Internet connection.

Kluge.net Record Uptime: I took the server down on July 4th, 1999 to upgrade it from Slackware 2.1 (installed while I was in college back in 1994) to RedHat Linux 6.x ... The uptime when I took it down was: "388 days, 3:35". The previous uptime was >160 days, interrupted due to a 4+ hour power outage.
