A few strategic tips from Theo:
- I tend to go full science and semi-full production in my civilization.
This allows me to produce improvements and units fairly quickly while racing
up the technology tree, hopefully outpacing the other civilizations.
Typically, he who has the most advanced technology wins.
- Build nearly all of the city improvements in each of your cities.
For the most part, you'll increase all the good things and decrease
all the bad things. Obviously, skip the items that will not give you
any benefits. (i.e.: If you selected that pollution is not on when you
started the game, avoid all of the anti-pollution improvements and wonders.)
- Pay attention to food, happiness, pollution, crime, etc. This sounds
obvious, but running out of food has no alerts like happiness does.
You will find yourself staring at a pop-up box that says populous in
city X will starve if you end the turn. Very bad.
- After building/taking over a city, immediately put a defensive
unit inside and fortify it. In one game, I founded a city (my capital)
and started building a granary. After a turn or two, an enemy unit came
through and took the city over.
- Go directly for Theocracy when starting -- the happiness bonus is a big
plus. I recommend running up the technology tree for the wonders listed on
the next slide in the presentation. After getting to the Diamond age, I tend
to go for Technocracy. After I have learned all of the scientific advances,
I put the brakes on science funding and improvements. Obvious, but annoying.
You do get a lot more gold per turn this way though.
