Theo's quick tips for good CTP game play:
- I find that playing at a high X resolution with a smaller game window is
better than playing full screen. (I use a 1280x1024 screen w/ a 800x600
game window.) As is standard with these types of strategy games, when the
mouse approaches the edge of the window, the map will scroll in that
direction. Trying to change virtual windows while playing full-screen can be
very annoying.
- Have X in 16bpp mode. 24 or 32bpp mode will cause all of the graphics to
be converted from 16bpp mode first which causes a major game
slowdown to occur.
- Mount the CD-ROM if you want to play movies. The game is smart enough to
look at all ISO9660 mounted filesystems for the movies, but it won't mount
the CD for you. The manual is a bit fuzzy about this.
- Have as much memory as you can. My machine is a K6-350MHz w/ 128Mb of
RAM, and I find that the game still swaps after I get to the later ages of
the game.
- Be prepared to become addicted! Make sure you don't mind
wasting^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hspending lots of quality time playing
the game. (One night, at 11pm, I said "I should go to sleep, but
let me just play another turn or two." The next time I looked at
the clock is was 3:45am.)
- Upgrade to CTP v1.1! You don't want to see "BUG! (Segmentation
Fault) Going down hard..." Visit the Loki Soft web site, and look
at their Technical FAQ. The patch is available there; it is 3.87Mb
in size.
